This sounds like the paper was  upside-down and the ink got on the wrong 
side. Is that a possibility?

Oddly enough, I just noticed the same thing last night printing with
QTR on the Epson 4000. The QTR images smudge and leave black ink on
my hands but using the Epson software all is fine (except for the bad
color cast.) I'm using the Ultrachrom inks and Epson Premium Luster
paper.

No idea whats causing it but it has put an end to my b&w image sales
until I can resolve it. Have you talked to the software author yet?
