The kit lens that comes with the Rebel XT costs about $100 and may not be worth that. I have the EF-S 17-85 lens that is image stabilized and am reasonably pleased with it. At least to my eye, it still cannot compete with a good prime lens on film, but it is a reasonably sharp lens and the image stabilizing feature is terriffic.
