Digital BW, The Print

I'm getting ready to purchase an Epson 4800 for my first venture
into fineart B&W printing.   Prior to this a professional with 30 
years in chemical  print making.  Is it true that you get better, 
richer blacks using matte finish papers with K3 pigments than with
lustre finish papers???  This is the opposite of the chemical world !
If true, what's the physics here?
