I suggest a clean break if your aim is consistent printing - the inks are not an exact match. Some of the colours are closer than others but it is likely you won't be happy with at least some prints. The cost in wasted paper could exceed the cost in wasted ink even if your time is free. I've done the equivalent switch on a 4000 - believe me that means more ink wasted (I guess >250 ml). Perhaps you can figure out how to keep the least-used carts in good condition, in case you ever want to switch back.
