MIS K4 inks for Epson R2400

MIS K4 inks for Epson R2400

2006-08-05 by Johnny Eades

I just bought an Epson R2400 printer and am getting to the end of the
initial cartridges in verying degrees. Not all of them are running out
equally as would be expected. I have a complete set of MIS K4
refillable carts to replace them with. My question is should I remove
all of the initial Epson carts and replace them with the MIS carts or
replace them separately as they need replacing? I realize I'll need to
create a new printer profile for the MIS K4 inks for the papers I use.
All feedback will be appreciated.

Johnny

Hi Johnny,

I was recently in the same boat. In my case all of the inks except the
c, m, y ran out at the same time, and so I replaced all except those.
Recently, I replaced the last three. There didn't seem to be any
problems, but I'm mainly running tests at the moment building up my
portfolio of "finished" files. I did find that I needed to re-profile.

Hi Johnny, I have the same setup. I replaced all at the same time for 2 reasons:

1. I didn't want to reprofile. (I dislike that particular chore.) I
ran a purge pattern after the K4 carts were installed and before I
built the profiles.
2. I wanted to keep a set of OEM inks on hand in case I ran into
quality problems. I actually replaced my set a little before I needed
to for this reason. I taped the exit ports and sealed them in a
baggie. I learned to do this when running 3rd party inks and a CIS in
an 1160 that was prone to a variety of ailments that were hard to
diagnose.

I find the K4 inks to be quite good once profiles are in place. And
very very few clogs. I love this printer.

I suggest a clean break if your aim is consistent printing - the inks
are not an exact match. Some of the colours are closer than others but
it is likely you won't be happy with at least some prints. The cost
in wasted paper could exceed the cost in wasted ink even if your time
is free.
I've done the equivalent switch on a 4000 - believe me that means more
ink wasted (I guess >250 ml).
Perhaps you can figure out how to keep the least-used carts in good
condition, in case you ever want to switch back.

i'm new to the 2400 and i've never used profiles in the past.

can you provide me a little more detail as to what these K4 profiles
are? is it just a matter of moving some slider bars in the 2400 driver
or what?

thanks

Kevin - K4 is an abbreviation for the ink I am using in my R2400
instead of Epson cartridges. I get them from www.inksupply.com .
Because these inks aren't an exact match to the original Epson inks,
it is necessary to create a printer profile for each paper I use with
them. My monitor is also calibrated and as a result, what I see on my
monitor matches the prints I produce. This is for color prints only.
For black and white, one of the best approaches is this one from
Clayton Jones (see item 9)

Hope this answers your question.

Thanks for replying Linda
I will most likely be using those MIS K4 inks in the future to save
money.

I'm still a bit fuzzy on profiles. Here are paper profiles for the
paper I will be using (Red River Aurora Art):
http://www.redrivercatalog.com/profiles/r2400profiles.htm
Wouldn't a paper profile like this be good enough for use with either
Epson or MIS inks? If not, then how does one use both a paper and ink
profile?

I'm really a "set it and forget it" type person (not so technical),
so these profiles and monitor calibration type stuff just tends to
confuse and bog me down. I just want to get acceptable results
without a lot of hassle. I'll be printing maybe 50% B&W, 50% color.

I have an Eye One display monitor calibration device. When I've used
it in the past I've simply calibrated using the "Easy" method.
Honestly, I can't tell that it even helps.

What do you think?

Regards,

Kevin
