4800 Margin Problems – Please Help!

Yesterday I received a new 4800 to add to my small stable of other
printers which also includes a R2400. Everything went fine until I
tried to print a few photos at my standard portfolio print size. My
process is to use Photoshop CS2 to upsize my image to 12.2" x 18.3".
I then add a 20px keyline border around the image, increase the
canvas size to 13" x 19" and add a copyright line on the bottom right
corner, outside the margin of the keyline. This configuration worked
fine on my R2400 where I was using 13" x 19" cut sheets, but I've
failed in my attempts to create the same prints on my 4800.

On the 4800, the short side of the paper (the last to leave the
printer) has a 16mm non-printable margin. On the leading short side
that margin is only 6mm. Because of this, the bottom portion of my
photos is not being printed. I've tried this with borderless turned
on and off as well as used a multitude of different combinations in
the print settings. In some cases, in CS2 Print with Preview, the
whole image is showing up fine in the preview window, but with the
Print Preview that comes with the Epson software enabled, that bottom
edge is always showing up as being cut off. Can anyone help me out
and offer any advice as to how I can correct this problem and get
started using this magnificent machine?

Thanks,

Rob, on my Epson 4000 machine when this happens it is usually because I
forgot to check the "center image" box in the paper setup with Epson
Printer Driver window. You might give that a try. Best, Phil

Thanks for the advice! However, I've tried changing that setting but it
didn't help in this case.

Anyone else?

Rob,

Unfortunately this is just the way the printer works -- the Pro printers are different
from the desktops printers. With sheets you must have a larger margin at the
bottom of the paper. Actually, your numbers are a little off: top and sides are .13 in,
bottom is .56 in or 3mm and 14mm respectively. You should be able to just fit your
12.2 x 18.3 image on a sheet of paper, but it won't be centered. Increasing the
Canvas size isn't recommended because something must be cropped off and then
you are leaving it to the driver to pick what gets cropped.

I think the choices are reducing your standard size a little, or trying out roll paper.
The roll paper restrictions are different than for sheet paper.

Here's the reply that I received from Epson:

START REPLY
-----------------------------

Thank you for taking the time to contact Epson. It is my pleasure to
respond to your inquiry.

The Stylus Pro 4800 has a cut sheet margin limitation of .116(3mm)
inches top, left and right and .55(14mm) inches bottom. So your image
will need to be small enough to fit within a 1.10 inches for a
leading a trailing edge and .232 left ane right. The only way to get
a truly even or "full bleed"
margin is through the use of roll paper. The hardware is incapable
of holding the paper and printing to the leading or trailing edge of
the media. Unfortunately, due to the volume of output that was
expected for the 4800 it is was designed to always have the .55 inch
margin along the bottom of cut sheet. The printer hardware needs that
much space to grip the paper allowing the proper feed step to produce
Epson photographic quality prints.
The best way work around the margin limitation is through the use of
roll paper.
Follow this key sequence on the front panel of the printer:

1) Press menu button twice.
2) Press the down arrow four times till you see "Paper margin"
3) Now press menu once, the selection should show "T/B 15mm"
4) Press the up arrow until you see 3mm then press "menu".
5) Now press pause and the printer will go to ready

Start by reading the manual. All is explained in B&W. ;-)

It's actually NOT explained in the manual. And I did read the manual--
several times. If you saw it in the manual yourself, where did you see
it and on what page?

Really? Funny thing is that the the "Epson Stylus Pro 4800 Printer
Guide" contains only 158 pages--and that includes the index.

I hope this serves as a lesson for folks who think it's cute to whip
off snide replies to other's posts.

No snide remarks. I am looking at the pdf Epson Stylus Pro 4400/4800
Reference Guide (English) that came with the printer now. It has 396 pages.
No idea what you are looking at. Printing with OSX begins on pg 178, it then
goes on to deal with the Control Panel pg 223, Maintenance Mode pg 258,
Paper Handling pg 263, Maintenance and Transportation pg 295, Problem Solver
pg 320, Product Information pg 359, Options and Consumable Products pg 373.

For anyone else having a tough time finding the Epson Reference Guide for
the 4800 (I do believe that at least in Europe it came on the install disk
that was shipped with the printer), it is available here:

The information is also available at the US site here:

http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&
infoType=Doc&oid=57105&prodoid=55197363

Click on Reference Guide. The information on print margins can be found by
looking at the item Page Setup Dialog Settings under Printing with Mac OS X
and then selecting Paper Size.
