Brian, Some while ago on this forum we discussed 300ppi vs 360ppi. You refer to dpi and the thread (see next) is about ppi. Are you mixing the two - it's easy to do. DPI is about ink (dots per inch) and is different to PPI which is about pixels per inch. Apologies if you do know this and aren't confused. Anyway the thread may shed some light.
