Chris, I'm not sure if this will work on your R220, but here's how I do it on the C86. I bend the paper slightly away from the paper guide and apply gentle to moderate downward pressure exerted against the top edge with my palm, while holding my fingers against the bent part. The idea is to get the vector of force as parallel with the feed path as possible, without buckling the paper. When the feed mechanism starts to grab the paper, I let go. It takes a bit of practice to get the timing right. Let go too late, it feeds all the way through. Let go too soon, and the paper doesn't feed. This works fairly consistently for me - but only with full letter sized sheets. I believe Clayton Jones also recommends pre-applying a slight curl at the leading edge of the paper beforehand (the leading edge is what goes through the feed path first). So you might try that too. Give it a try. The results are well worth it. I love the weight and look of Photo Rag.
