r220 won't print with PhotoRag

r220 won't print with PhotoRag

2006-08-22 by chriskjezp

I got Paul's sample paper pack from inksupply.com, and I'm making several prints on
different papers. All of them work fine... except for Photo Rag. The printer just won't take it
- I get a "paper not loaded correctly" message every time. I've even tried giving it a little
nudge but when I do that the printer just passes it all the way through.

Has anyone else had this problem?

All minor issues aside, I'm having a blast with this and I'm amazed at the quality of prints this
$70 machine can produce. A very sincere thank you to Paul and Clayton and everyone here
who helped me understand the basics and get started.

Best,
Chris

Chris, I'm not sure if this will work on your R220, but here's how I
do it on the C86. I bend the paper slightly away from the paper guide
and apply gentle to moderate downward pressure exerted against the top
edge with my palm, while holding my fingers against the bent part. The
idea is to get the vector of force as parallel with the feed path as
possible, without buckling the paper.

When the feed mechanism starts to grab the paper, I let go.

It takes a bit of practice to get the timing right. Let go too late,
it feeds all the way through. Let go too soon, and the paper doesn't
feed.

This works fairly consistently for me - but only with full letter
sized sheets.

I believe Clayton Jones also recommends pre-applying a slight curl at
the leading edge of the paper beforehand (the leading edge is what
goes through the feed path first). So you might try that too.

Give it a try. The results are well worth it. I love the weight and
look of Photo Rag.

Hello Chris,

Nudging too hard. Have to find just the right amount. I've found it
helps to bend a small amount of curl in the leading edge.

Clayton

It will feed, but might drive you batty. You need to support it as
it goes in, but not push it so hard that it passes through all the
way. Sometimes I get it on the first try, sometimes it takes 3 or 4
tries...

The R220 seems to like thin papers better, and likes the Innova 315
as well. Moab 300, Photorag, etc don't feed well at all.

There is a "thick paper" option in the print driver (well buried)
but I haven't found that it does anything useful, and annoyingly
prompts you each time you try to print.

The R220 is a great printer and worth the $5 or so I spent on it
(the price minus selling the OEM inks on ebay).

Chris

I print on PhotoRag 308 with the r220. You have to help the paper
through by resting your hand on its top edge as the printer pulls it
from the feeder. If you push too hard or not hard enough then it
doesn't go through.

It can be frustrating, but keep trying and your patience will be
rewarded. It's definitely worth it.

Yes. I've had the same problem. I will never use the paper again. It
ultimately blocks the feed mechanism on my 220, 2200 and also my 2400.
I say 'ultimately' because it sometimes feeds a few sheets.
I cannot explain why but my theory is that something is coming off the
surface which is why a few sheets feed.
Many people here have no such issue. It's bizarre.
All other papers I use load just fine. (Innova Smooth, Merlin, Silver
Rag, Kayenta, VFA, Enhanced Matte etc.)
