Joe, You've received a bunch of great replies already but I'd like to add that when printing for others (the scenario you describe) a great print is one that communicates the client's vision on paper. A good print IMHO simply doesn't distract from the content of the image. No artifacts, good resolution, appropriate sharpening, etc. So it's really about the relationship you can establish with your clients. The printer/ photographer relationship can be (though not always is) akin to a collaboration. You may explore a paper/ink combo that makes the print sing while your competitor may have a stock they use for everyone's images. You may make certain edits or (suggestions of edits if the client is supplying the file) that enhance the meaning of the image, as defined by the photographer. FIve years ago you could distinguish yourself from the competition simply by making good prints. THe standard for digital b/w in the mainstream digital industry was pretty low. Today, with all the high quality and affordable b/w options available you have to make great prints. And a great print is inextricably linked to the photographer's intent. How far are you willing to go to communicate her intent? That's your point of differentiation. amadou diallo www.diallophotogrpahy.com
