I'm sure Epson lost money on this series, but if ink sales was the problem, Epson has only itself to blame. A combination of aggressive promotions, ebay, and initial design flaws conspired to glut the market with cheap OEM cartridges that happened to be packaged with free printers that people didn't want. The result had to be very low demand for standalone replacement carts, period, regardless of who made them.
