Digital BW, The Print

I use the Epson ultrachrome inkset with matte black on my 2200 for col 
and black & white. Carts cost a fortune here and I am not keen on a 
continuous ink supply as I had many hassles with my previous printer 
(1160). I am considering a chip resetter

to squeeze a little more ink out of the carts.
Do they work well? Do you get quite a bit more ink out of the carts? 
Does the priter stop operating when you're truly/actually out of a col?
Are there any problems to consider?
