Elevation changes can cause cartridges that have been opened to leak.  I
think that is one reason they recommend taking the carts out.

There would still be ink in the heads.  I've flushed the heads on printers
and then transported them with no carts.  I try to have a piece of paper of
tape over the inlets to keep the dust out.  I wonder if one could find some
rubber tubing that fit the inlets, fill them with distilled water, and then
do a cleaning cycle.  That might clean out the heads enough, but I'm
speculating.
