The market for 35mm film scanners is drying up, as you know. We've been using the Minolta and Nikon scanners in our student labs with very good results. I'd suggest you look at Nikon. The software is clunky, the transport mechanism is clunky (all consumer and pro-sumer are), it's a bit slow, but used properly you'll produce very good scans.

We teach a scanning procedure, "SSPP" (scan with the scanner, process in Photoshop) that isolates the three main scanning variables: resolution, bit depth, and color space. Using SSPP will optimize the image files you can achieve with any scanner.

Both Microtek and Epson make flatbed scanners that are excellent values; there is an Epson model that incorporates a wet mounting option. Depending on the size file you need, and the size of prints you want to make, these might be worth consideration.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me off-list.

My Minolta Elite Dimage 5400 died after 3 years. Sony just wrote me
that Konica/Minolta cannot repair it as they ceased exist in March
2006.However,they had me send it and received it on Jan 3, '07 for
repair - and now after 2 months - they tell me they are dead. I don't
know if I will be refunded the $111 repair fee I sent. Meanwhile I need
ASAP a new 35 mm film/slide scanner under $1000. The reviews I read are
 all mixed. Recommendations gratefully accepted!
