Digital BW, The Print

I've searched the archives, but I have yet to find a clear description 
of just the ABW system does and how it does it. If someone could 
explain it clearly and in detail or provide a link, it would help me 
understand.

For example, what do the horizontal and vertical controls do? That is 
just one question among many I have.
