I've searched the archives, but I have yet to find a clear description of just the ABW system does and how it does it. If someone could explain it clearly and in detail or provide a link, it would help me understand. For example, what do the horizontal and vertical controls do? That is just one question among many I have. Paul

It contains a step by step workflow for using the 2400 in ABW mode. It's more of a "How To" than "How it works" article, but it should give a good overview. >For example, what do the horizontal and vertical controls do? The H and V controls change coordinates which move the dot around. 0h,0v is the center point and creates a print tone close to neutral (the actual tone varies with different papers). The controls can be positive or negative numbers and can position the dot anywhere in the circle to produce whatever tone you want. The left/right axis is green/magenta, up/down axis is yellow/blue. So a sepia tone, for example, can be produced with 20h,40v. My favorite setting is 2h,8v which produces a slightly warm tone on Photorag and VFA papers. >That is just one question among many I have. Thank you for the feedback. Yes, I have read (and re-read) Clayton's informative site and emailed him regarding his workflow. It seems an empirical approach, and I still don't really understand what the ABW system does except create a custom tone. Can someone also tell me what the shadow and highlight tonality do and the Highlight Point Shift setting? I don't seem to have any success when using canned profiles using CS2. I end up with horrible prints, usually much darker than the image on-screen. If I understand correctly, most people select no colour management and then use the ABW settings to fine-tune their prints? Is there a lot of latitude in this? Apart from toning and the lighter to darker controls, there does not seem to be a lot of control. I have had some success printing with Quadtone, but again, only with canned profiles. I have wasted a lot of ink and paper and have yet to achieve any good prints with the K3 inks, whereas using Quadtone and Piezo inks, I have achieved very good results with little fuss. Are you soft proofing in CS? Poor image quality can many times be an indication if improper setting used to view the file, not the file output setting(s).
