I am running light room on 3 machines...an old athlon,   a dual core Athlon
and a MacBook Pro.  

 

All run great.  I can say I did have problems with the Beta Versions begin
reliable but once I installed Version 1.0 it has run great.

Wow. I find this very odd, in that I run Lightroom at lightning fast 
speed on my Mac G5 with 4 GB of RAM. Heck, I can even run it on my G4 
laptop with only 512KB of RAM. Granted, it's a tad slow on the G4, 
but it does nothing like you describe. This does not sound like 
normal behavior -- given the RAM you have installed. Even if it is a 
PC. <g>
