Subject: Re: [Digital BW] More CS3 printing problems reported..
..within a session, it may be ONLY with Win Vista installations. Are
you using Vista or another Win OS?
Adobe OTOH is saying it's because they have moved to a new per-document
oriented work flow. Increasingly, it's looking to be a problem of the
interrelationship between Windows and Photoshop CS3 - possibly related
to how the Mac side coding didn't translate as expected to the Windows
platform.
As for your other question: about the numbers of satisfied vs.
dissatisfied CS3 customers...
1) Satisfaction is not the singular appropriate measure for whether an
upgrade is advisable or successful. Things like: not breaking a feature
that worked, computability, cost, number of bugs, all play into the
choice of the user. Satisfaction simply measures whether, on the whole a
consumer is happy with their choice. There is tons of psychological,
marketing, and communications data showing how and why, even WITH
significant problems relating to a purchased product, people will
generally report they are "satisfied" with their purchase. Even if they
find substantial bugs, people will still continue to report being
"satisfied" after a purchase decision (not least because of selective
perception to reinforce a purchasing decision as "correct")
Accordingly, users being "satisfied" is a mighty low bar to set,
especially when we are talking about the only real professional image
editing program in the market.
2) I don't think even Adobe has those numbers.
3) The same argument is often made about many products. In my
experience with inkjet printing, for example, that argument was made by
many who pointed out the initial inaccurate/misadvertised claims by
EPSON, in its own marketing materials, of the print longevity of the
1280 and 880 series of EPSON dye-based printers.
The issue wasn't whether (in that case) it made nice prints. It was
whether EPSON's own claims were valid and/or whether the product had
significant issues which could affect (but might well not)
users/consumers. Similarly, for me, the issue is NOT whether people
should upgrade to CS3, whether it has great new features, or even if it
generally works well. The issue is that potential consumers and people
who have already bought, should have this information easily available.
EPSON, Adobe, Canon, MicroSoft, etc. all advertise on YAHOO!, Google,
and all over the net. They get the good news out quite easily, and
trumpet it repeatedly. (I also give products that perform as reported
solid reviews.) But, for people to know about potential product
shortcomings, lists related in some way to the product are one of the
most useful means for conveying such info. In fact, it's part of the
rationale for these lists: debate regarding the pros and cons of
particular products and/or approaches/methodologies.
