Digital BW, The Print

Forgive me if this seems to be a basic question but I am just starting 
out in the area of BW ditigal printing. 

I have downloaded the QTR software to try out but the results I am 
getting seem somewhat dark. Smooth though. Is it possible that I am 
double profiling or something? I am printing direct from QTR and I do 
not have Photoshop.
