If you print a Gamma 2.2 gray ramp, read it, and graph the L* values from your Lab readings, the shadows appear clogged. If you run the 5 point adjustment, it fixes that clog. Of course, the clog wasn't there in the first place in gamma 2.2. So an L* workflow might fix this in advance. But whatever the cause or percieved cause, I prefer the more open shadows in both color and B&W, and I usually use the same profile for both anyways, so the adjustment applies to both.
