Charlotte, if it were me I might use Moab Entrada Natural, a
cream-colored paper (not whitened at all). It's a longtime favorite of
many inkjet printer folk. 

Moab papers are going through renaming and market-rethinking, but this
is an important possible source and advisor:

What are the circumstances of your portraits? 

I'm in the middle of "Indian Country" and am always eager to see
portraits of the native people around me, Navajo especially. Are you
Native American? Being white, I've been reluctant to do portraits of
my native friends...maybe that's just my personal weakness.
