The ink doesn't bond tightly and can be lifted with a damp spotting brush and then applied to the areas of the print that need spotting. The main advantage of this approach is that it gives you 21 steps of gray so matching the flaked area is fairly easy. Also, you can put the wedge aside when you are finished and use it again when needed. It's a bit like using a ceramic dish with the old spot tone dyes without the manual mixing.
