You're right.  The dyes do raise one issue.  I've found Eboni doesn't mix
well with dyes.  There is so little in the head, it'll be all blown out by
the normal cleaning cycle that happens when inks are changed.  However, what
I found in the days of the 1280 is that residual dye on the parking pad
would, apparently, cause the Eboni to form clumps that then stuck onto the
head.  These caused minor but nuisance clogs.  What I found worked was to
rinse the parking pad with Windex (or probably even water) to get the dye
off of it and stop the Eboni from mixing with it.

Epson OEM inks for R220 are dye based, while MIS inks are pigment
based. I don't know if that makes a difference.
