Ethernet cards in the printers will likely be more workable than Firewire.
Trying to network a firewire connected printer may be causing your issue.
Try an Ethernet card in one of your printers.

 Airport is quite slow as a networking device, too, so passing files to the
print server is limited to 11Mbs -- you might want to equip your
workstations with ethernet cards too.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
