Please have a look at article #9 at the link below.  It outlines a
simple workflow for the 2400, and applies also to the 3800.  In
particular the part about the relationship between the image profile
and the Tone setting in the ABW driver with choices for Light, Normal,
Dark, Darker, etc.  These may have something to do with what you're
describing.
