Sounds like excessive ink loading...QTR controls that with sliders, would allow you to reduce loading without losing Dmax (or, if you go the other way, you can make black puddles with it :-). 2200's Epson driver doesn't directly control ink loading, but I think there's a laborious Photoshop workaround.
