Cold-tone inks for Epson 4800?

2007-09-27 by t_j_l_s

I'm looking for a cold-tone pigment ink set that I can use in an Epson 4800. I would
prefer a greyscale workflow in Photoshop so I'm thinking one of the solutions with an
external RIP would be ideal.

However, I have read several reviews that say that the (very expensive!) Piezography inks
for the 4800 are not really neutral; they're more warm-tone. Since I do mostly night work,
that definitely won't do. And I cannot seem to figure out whether any of the MIS ink sets
will work -- I see sets for the 2400 that should work with the QuadTone RIP, and sets for
the older 17" and larger printers, e.g. the 4000, but nothing for the 4800.

I realize there may be a bulk ink solution but I'm having a heck of a time figuring out what
it would be, since if I tell Inksupply's cartridge finder I want everything suitable for the
4800 it actually gives me at least two contradictory sets of empty MIS cartridges, one of
which I'm pretty sure won't fit. Also, I can't figure out if the chips in these cartridges can
be reset, and if so how -- at $40 per, it could get pretty pricy if not.

If it's possible to use the MIS inks with this printer, that seems like a nice option. If so,
could someone maybe offer me a complete shopping list? Or if the Piezography solution
isn't as warm-tone as I've heard, perhaps that would work too; I'd appreciate comments.

Thanks!

Thor
