Cold-tone inks for Epson 4800?

Cold-tone inks for Epson 4800?

2007-09-27 by t_j_l_s

I'm looking for a cold-tone pigment ink set that I can use in an Epson 4800. I would
prefer a greyscale workflow in Photoshop so I'm thinking one of the solutions with an
external RIP would be ideal.

However, I have read several reviews that say that the (very expensive!) Piezography inks
for the 4800 are not really neutral; they're more warm-tone. Since I do mostly night work,
that definitely won't do. And I cannot seem to figure out whether any of the MIS ink sets
will work -- I see sets for the 2400 that should work with the QuadTone RIP, and sets for
the older 17" and larger printers, e.g. the 4000, but nothing for the 4800.

I realize there may be a bulk ink solution but I'm having a heck of a time figuring out what
it would be, since if I tell Inksupply's cartridge finder I want everything suitable for the
4800 it actually gives me at least two contradictory sets of empty MIS cartridges, one of
which I'm pretty sure won't fit. Also, I can't figure out if the chips in these cartridges can
be reset, and if so how -- at $40 per, it could get pretty pricy if not.

If it's possible to use the MIS inks with this printer, that seems like a nice option. If so,
could someone maybe offer me a complete shopping list? Or if the Piezography solution
isn't as warm-tone as I've heard, perhaps that would work too; I'd appreciate comments.

Thanks!

Thor

ABW also works fine with the Y = EZW, but the "neutral" position will print
cooler with no high gamut yellow in the mix. This will give you the easiest
control and fastest printing, but it does not give as much control as a rip.

Thanks, Paul. The only thing is, I still can't figure out how to get
any of these inks into cartridges for the 4800. Inkjetsupply's pages
for the MIS inks don't list any of them in 4800 cartridges, and their
cartridge finder lists empty carts that I believe are incompatible
with the printer -- cartridges for the "4000/7600/9600". Epson's
color carts for these models don't have the same part numbers as the
corresponding carts for the 4800...

I haven't used the Piezo K7 inks, but you could look at their
Piezotone cool neutral set.

It is a three ink set that you pair with either of their Black ink
options.

I use the Selenium and Carbon Sepia sets and mix them with QTR on a
7600 and get great results.

If you want more control of the tone you can stick with the OEM inks
and use Advanced Black and White, or I am sure Roark has some ideas.

This is MIS's response to the 4800 cartridge issue:

"On the 4800 refill instructions, it will depend on the cartridges, but here
is a link to one style of cartridge, they are the same as 4000/7600/9600....

http://www.inksupply.com/9600.cfm "

I don't have a 4800, so I'm not able to comment on compatibility issues.

EZW for Y in Epson 4800 -- which EZW ink exactly?

It looks like I could probably also use this configuration with a RIP, though I guess I'd have
quite a bit of profiling to do (and I have no color densitometer). Since it would be very
nice to be able to switch the printer back and forth between color and B&W use without
changing all the inks, I might go this way -- I'm in the middle of a book project with
another photographer who just lost access to the printer he was using for his color work,
so one printer we could switch back and forth would be ideal.

I have figured out the cartridge issue. The 4800 and 4000 are nearly identical *except*
that the 4800 will recognize a "light light black" chip, so only the LLK cartridges are
specific to the 4800. Now I just need to figure out which EZ Warm ink I need to buy bulk
and load into 4000/4800 Yellow cartridges. The inksupply web page shows a differerent
EZW bulk ink for each position in the printers they sell it for -- which one do I want?

Thanks!

Thor

The main purpose of the Y=EZW approach was to allow people who liked the ABW
workflow to use that workflow yet have the advantages of the rip cutting out
all the extra color. If you use a rip you'll be able to accomplish the same
thing with the full complement of color inks in the printer, but not being
used for B&W work.

There may be profiles already made in the QTR rip that you can use.

QTR may be your best answer if it has the profiles you need already.

All the EZ-W inks are the same.
