PremierArt Platinum Rag

PremierArt Platinum Rag

2007-09-26 by Richard Smallfield

Hi,
Just got samples of Platinum Rag and did a test print from my 2100 with UC inks & QTR ... with Matt K.

The solid black areas are great (never seen such dMax from any of my printers - including with HP 59 dye inks) but there is some expected bronzing in the mid-tones. I still might be tempted. Might try a laminate to see if I can reduce the bronzing.

With Epson K3 or other reduced-bronzing inks, this is a contender. Far nicer than Resin paper.

I just sprayed one with Lyson Print Guard which cleared up the bronzing and gloss differential - except for the solid matt black area which is matt.

I brushed on Giclee Media Supplies Waterbased Matt Giclee Shield on the other ... left brush marks and bubbles - but if I can find a better way of applying it, that might be a good option, too. *Totally* fixed the gloss diff and bronzing; also smoothed out the texture.

But still, a fibre-based silver gelatin print is isn't.

The best way to get gelatin silver prints is in a wet
darkroom. Lacking real appreciation for gelatin silver
prints, one is probably better off with the better
matte inkjet papers, which in my opinion can readily
look better than gelatin silver. IMO.

I loved Agfa Portriga Rapid and Fotorite (more silver
than anything ever), and Dupont Varilour, but I make
better prints on HPR.

In print exchanges I've seen the allegedly most
gelatin-silver-like (baryta etc) prints, the most
expensive paper, and it's sad. The photographers are
so dedicated to faking gelatin silver that they accept
stuff that looks like it's been printed on old
fashioned waxed paper.

Or on a Light-Jet with digital b&w fiber paper. If you have not seen
one, see one.

I'm using Innova Semi-Matte fiber also called Satin. It is nice and
thick and at least for color work is pretty much idential to the old
fiber based color papers that Agfa used to produce.

Mark, you're right...however I intended to address people who
personally made prints, and who would demand more control over their
work than they'd get from a Light Jet photolab...

Richard et. al,

When you folks are using QTR for these new papers, are you building
the curves yourself? I'm pretty sure there's no downloadable curve
for Platinum Rag on the QTR website, right? I have an R2400 with K3 inks.

Thanks,
Chris

I used the EEM curve because and it worked ok.
