It uses up ink, but there's really no better alternative. This route is more efficient than artificially clearing nozzles with puddle and Windex methods. You need to "blow the tubes out" a little. Check your ink lines for air pockets by lifting the white plastic 'fence' covering the tubes leading to the head. It could be ink starvation in some of the lines with air bubbles instead of a continuous line of ink. Post your results.
