Digital BW, The Print

I realize this list is for black and white printing, but i had an issue tonight with a printer at school and really don't know who else to ask, so please have a bit of patience. 
   
  My students were printing away when i had to change a few ink carts. One was fine, the other is creating issues. The printer doesn't seem to recognize it , so i tried another and the same issue occurred.
   
  The cart that is giving the problem just happens to be an EPSON, which i thought interesting. When the ink level page comes up there is an X on the ink column. 
   
  I followed the directions and attempt to several times to remove the cart and re-place but no luck.  THe other re-placements are working fine.
   
  At one time the message came up that the inks were charging but then jumped to the directins on how to replace , etc.
  I was wondering if the connection needs to be cleaned; ie. with a q tip or something? 
  Any suggestions?
