Digital BW, The Print

I have'nt a clue as how to use paper profiles. I read about them, understand why they are needed and have downloaded the profiles for Epson papers when I set up my R1800 the other night. 
   
  I ran a couple of test prints on different papers and saw a drop down menu in the Advance Section of my printer page naming different types of Epson papers. 
   
  Are these profiles in some kind of code, letters, or the like, or, are the profiles as simple as the paper names i.e., Espson Fine Art, Matte, etc etc.
   
  I know there are profiles for the QTR rip, but I may need some kind of primer as how to use them and in general color printing.
   
  Any help, link, resource etc will be appreciated to further my understanding and use of paper profiles for the papers recommended by Paul Roarke.
