Really the lower dmax on matte is not that bad. I print only on matte and on papers like PremierArt Matte BW (for cheaper bright white prints) or Epson Velvet or Moab Entrada for rag prints, I am never disappointed. Some other papers do have lower dmax though, so it's usually worth getting samples before you splash out.
