MIS ink question

MIS ink question

2007-10-24 by Frank Jay

hello
I bought a set of MIS inks specifically for my new R1800. The directions on the website say these inks are to be used on matte papers. I bought a pack of trial papers suggested by Paul Roarke because I konw nothing about this. My question is this...if the inks are to be used on matte papers , why is there an ink for the GO spot on the ink carrier. I thought that was for glossy papers.

  thanks
  frank in NJ

Frank,

Are you printing through QuadToneRip (QTR)?

Paul set up the R800/1800 to print with 3 matte black carts installed
in the printer.

Paul chose the MK, PK, and GO position for 3MK
printing. That way if some one stilled wanted to print color, they
still could. If one wanted to use glop, they would just pull the MK
cart from the GO position and re-install a glop cart.

(This set up works so well for me, that I forget I'm printing BO. 3MK
prints real smooth. I like the little courseness of "straight BO",
but none of the newer printers permit it.)

Re: MIS ink question

Scott, I will check when I get home. But from what you say it is 3
black inks even though one goes into the GO slot. I imagine I got
what was supposed to get as the sales rep was sharp and knew exactly
what I wanted for the R1800.

so, if I want glossy I put in the OEM GO and print away.
If you will, can you answer this....when I print color, can I use
the OEM inks and the MIS blacks?

I have not downloade the QTR yet. I was going to purchase it tonite
and begin trying it out, but, after reading the not so encouraging
thread on not so good black and white on matte, I am not sure if I
will buy it or not and return the inks if I can.

I do hope I have found the process I want to have to do black and
white. I do NOT want to go back to the darkroom. I can't stand the
smell anymore.
thanks
Frank

If you want gloss, have Photo Black in the PK slot and GO in the GO
slot and you can print glossy prints.

I believe people have been using the MIS black inks and the OEM color
inks together with sucess. I haven't tried it though.

As fas as QTR is concerned, you can try it before you buy it. So,
download QTR and give it a try.

Re: MIS ink question

thanks for the help scott with the inks. I received three black inks, one that goes in the GO slot.

For anyone else. The sales person who took my order for the ink told me there was no need to use the cleaning carts if I switch back to the OEM GO, just purge the ink out. . Then I read someplace , here I think, that I must use the cleaning cart....which is correct?
  thanks for the help

Frank,
You're o.k. switching between the Epson OEM inks and the MIS inks.

You don't need cleaning carts.

Frank,

Really the lower dmax on matte is not that bad. I print only on matte and on papers like PremierArt Matte BW (for cheaper bright white prints) or Epson Velvet or Moab Entrada for rag prints, I am never disappointed. Some other papers do have lower dmax though, so it's usually worth getting samples before you splash out.

Good luck,
Richard
