RE: [Digital BW] EPSON Perfection 2450 Photo scanner

2002-02-01 by Tim Atherton

Alan,

i wonder if the 2450 has fixed an earlier Epson scanner problem?

the Epson 1640 has an inherent problem on larger format scans of a
criss-cross and banding pattern showing up in light, even areas - skies,
walls etc. especially from neg scans.

this is caused by the scanner actually picking up the cross hatch pattern
that makes up the cold cathode fluorescent flat tube in the lid. it's too
close or not diffused enough in the 1640. you can see the pattern if you
look closely at the illuminated area when it's on. in scans this pattern
looks at first like banding in skies etc. but on closer inspection you can
see the pattern of the tube.

have you scanned larger negs? b&w or colour? noticed if this has occurred
during your testing? (for a long time i thought it was the usual poor blue
channel on a cheap scanner...)
