Carl,

it seems very good, especially for MF, being a little below par for 35mm.
You can see a thorough review here:

and here:

You may want to check also the new flatbed Canon (also 2400 dpi), although I
couldn't find reviews about it.

Subject: [Digital BW] EPSON Perfection 2450 Photo scanner

Feb Shutterbug P78 discusses it. Sounds as if I could scan my old tri-x
35mm negs that never made it from my darkroom to the contact sheet. Moved
to new house with no darkroom before any prints were made.

Anyone know abt this scanner? -- seems to be the first one that I've run
across where you can scan both flat objects and 35mm film effectively.

Thanks,

Carl

Alan,

i wonder if the 2450 has fixed an earlier Epson scanner problem?

the Epson 1640 has an inherent problem on larger format scans of a
criss-cross and banding pattern showing up in light, even areas - skies,
walls etc. especially from neg scans.

this is caused by the scanner actually picking up the cross hatch pattern
that makes up the cold cathode fluorescent flat tube in the lid. it's too
close or not diffused enough in the 1640. you can see the pattern if you
look closely at the illuminated area when it's on. in scans this pattern
looks at first like banding in skies etc. but on closer inspection you can
see the pattern of the tube.

have you scanned larger negs? b&w or colour? noticed if this has occurred
during your testing? (for a long time i thought it was the usual poor blue
channel on a cheap scanner...)

Carl,

Check back through the list for my posts - I have been testing the 2450.
Getting a lot of miles on it and it gets better as I learn how to match it
with my output. I'm at about 1800 ppi as the best rez it is capable of for
quad prints. It could get better when I get better. I think it is the best
buy winner for flat bed film scanners.

Tim,

Good point - some enlarger cold lights have this problem too. I'll try
testing it.
