4880, qtr, and k7 inks

2007-12-08 by sonya_modotti

hi everyone,

although qtr and piezography k7 inks do not yet support the new epson 4880 printer,
here's how to make it work (using an intel mac, qtr 2.5.1, and cs3):

- install qtr for the epson 4800. after installation, select quad4800 as the printer in
photoshop, and the qtr dialogue will then control the 4880 through the ethernet printer
connction.
- manually install the 4800 k7 curves in the quad4800 curves folder.
- remove one of the epson 4880 cartridges and locate the additional hole above the ink
port on the face of the cartridge that does not exist on the k7 cartridges that were made
for the 4800.
- using the tip of an exacto knife, grind the missing hole into the k7 cartridges at the
same location as the hole in the 4880 cartridge.
- replace the k7 4800 chips with the appropriate 4880 chips from the epson cartridges.
- using a chip resetter, reset all of the 4880 chips that have now been inserted onto the k7
cartridges. if 110 ml chips have been inserted onto 220 ml k7 cartridges, they can
probably be reset again when the printer indicates that a "110 ml cartridge" is empty.
- install the modified k7 cartridges into the 4880. they will be recognized as new original
epson cartridges.
- run 2 - 3 power cleaning cycles to purge the espon colour inks. most of the channels in
my 4880 were completely purged in 2 cycles. the yellow channel required an additional
power cleaning cycle.
- run a nozzle check and cleaning cycle if necessary.
- print and enjoy.

regards,

sonya
