The advantage of having a small C: partition is that when Windows bites
the dust and you have to reformat and re-install it, you lose only what
was on that partition, not all your data which should have been on a
separate partition. Having a completely separate disk is preferable but,
if you only have one disk, it  makes sense to partition it. The C: drive
should only have the Windows OS and program files for which you have the
original installation disks/files so that you can re-install them.

This used to be true of Windows 98, but with XP you can re-install and leave 
all your data in place without formatting the disc. IMO, there is no valid 
reason for using partitions with Windows XP. They are an un-necessary 
complication, and in my experience there is more data lost by partitions 
going wrong than if they are not used at all.
