I think they misinformed you.

'While two K's K+lK are used on shiny stock they are also combining 
composite colours to extend the contrast range. The overall look B&W on 
photo media is rich and smooth.'

HP's usage stats for B&W composite printing (B9180) show the Gray 
cartridge is used most of all.
