I am sure Paul Roark will jump in and help you out, but in the 
meantime did you double check all of your setting in the Epson driver 
panel. Also, I know this will sound strange and perhaps obvious, but 
are you printing on the coated side of the paper?  I have been know 
to print on the wrong side at least once. ;-)

On my Epson 1280, the VM inks produce lovely smooth prints with deep 
rich dense shadows that are fully open with detail.
