This is exactly what I did with my 1280 recently.  I hadn't used it 
for several months.  I ran a number of clean/check cycles to no 
avail. I sprayed a good bit of Windex, actually Glass Plus, on the 
pad and let it sit for an hour or so.  I ran the head check a couple 
of times and Voila! it was all good and no problems since.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
