Are you using the single sheet guide?  I had trouble with the multi-sheet feeder at first also.  Certain papers, such as Epson matte paper heavyweight would work ok most (but not all) of the time.  When I went to the heavy Crane Museo II 250 gsm matte, it would not pick up a sheet at all.  I installed the single sheet guide and loaded it per instructions and it works reliably.  But one must remember to set the "Media" to "Manual Roll (rear)" for this to work.  The latter setting is for QTR.  There is a similar setting in the Epson RIP.  I have been able to feed both 8.5x11 and 13x19 sheets reliably.
