Epson 1800 1st impressions

Epson 1800 1st impressions

2008-03-28 by frogeyesfred

Well, it's a piece of junk. Feeding problems is really an
understatement with this machine. Spent all morning trying to entice
is to do what it's supposed to do...Print. What a laugh. Of course
Epson is out with a new and improved 1900 but that's not much help here.

Had a knowledgeable friend suggest an HP9180 but would I listen?
Nah...My 1270 lasted 6 years and did quite well with BO printing. I
guess Seiko would throw that back at me if I wrote them a nasty note.

Is there solution for making the 1800 feed matte paper reliably? Had
I not invested in a CIS for this thing I'd give it away but too late now.

One thing for certain, I should have kept my Focomat.

Frustrated in Florida

Walt:

Sorry to hear of your problems. I have had an R1800 for about 18 months and
has been very reliable. I print on a variety of matt papers, including my
favorite Epson Velvet without any hassle. Can you explain your problem in a
little more detail.

The machine will not feed the Epson Enhanced Matte at least half the
time. I can load single sheets (8.5x11) or several, it makes no
difference. It will cycle but for some reason the paper will not feed.
Naturally, I went to the Epson site and checked for fixes. Cleaning
rollers, blowing dust away, etc.

This happens whether I'm using large sheets or 4x6 card size. The CIS
(A Lyson with 3mk) works like a charm. Clayton's QTR is outstanding
and if I get a print, it's superb. I'd never go back to a Focomat
since the new methods have so many pluses. When they work. :)

When I first used the machine it was with the luster paper. Feeds
fine, looks like hell. (to me at least) I generally find a method I
like and stick with it. I want to use matte-surfaced paper but not
pebbled, artsy crafty stuff. to many years as a photojournalist) I'd
always had very good luck with the Epson EEM paper but open to other
suggestions.

Thanks,

Walt (doing much better now after several clonidines)

RE: [Digital BW] Epson 1800 1st impressions

Sounds like the take up platen maybe worn. Is it still under warranty? This
is very similar problem I had with my Epson 2200 - it did not die an early
death I just made that many prints it plain wore out.

Have you tried the manual feed rather than the sheet feed?

Sorry cannot be more helpful

Mike

Mike

Thanks for the advice anyway. I'm going to try an old Indian tricks
learned when gowning up in Arizona. I'm going to dance around with a
snake. Heck, they made it rain, maybe it will work for me.:)

Walt

p.s. Might also try some other matte paper.

Re:Epson 1800 1st impressions

2008-03-29 by George the studmuffin

Are you using the single sheet guide? I had trouble with the multi-sheet feeder at first also. Certain papers, such as Epson matte paper heavyweight would work ok most (but not all) of the time. When I went to the heavy Crane Museo II 250 gsm matte, it would not pick up a sheet at all. I installed the single sheet guide and loaded it per instructions and it works reliably. But one must remember to set the "Media" to "Manual Roll (rear)" for this to work. The latter setting is for QTR. There is a similar setting in the Epson RIP. I have been able to feed both 8.5x11 and 13x19 sheets reliably.

I have several Epson Printers from R1800, 4800, 7800, 9800 and I
don't have any problems. I would help but as nothing of substance is
coming from your fingers I cannot think of anything that would help
you other than be sensible when you ask for help in these forums.
