Steve, I used to have similar problems with my 4000. I've since discovered that simply manually feeding from the sheet feeder tray works perfectly for all papers (even canvas sheets). Just load up the tray with paper and hit the front panel up arrow feed button once to load a sheet. I don't know if the 3800 has a similar front loading tray or not, but if it does it might be worth trying.
