It could be a grayscale ramp that is not as smooth as it should be. Try printing a 21-step test file like the one posted here -- http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/21-Step-L16-16-bit.zip -- and see if the smooth ramp above the steps has some areas where the transitions are uneven. Even where the steps are right on, there can be uneven transitions.
