Epson 1280 MIS UT2 Inkset Lightning Image Printing Question

Epson 1280 MIS UT2 Inkset Lightning Image Printing Question

2008-06-17 by Brian

I have recently started printing with the UT2 inkset and for the most
part I'm very happy with the results. I made a printer profile with
Pantone ColorVision scanner and it seems to work pretty well. I have an
image of lightning that I shot with my modified infrared camera that I
would like to print black and white. When I try to print the image it
comes out with narrow bands radiating from the lightning to the dark
sky. On the screen its a nice smooth transition, but on the paper its
very noticable transitions. When I print it with color inks it comes
out smooth like on the screen. Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.
Brian

It could be a grayscale ramp that is not as smooth as it should be.
Try printing a 21-step test file like the one posted here --
http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/21-Step-L16-16-bit.zip --
and see if the smooth ramp above the steps has some areas where the
transitions are uneven. Even where the steps are right on, there can be
uneven transitions.

Paul,
Thanks for the reply. I printed the step chart and I noticed a less than smooth transition right near the 50% mark and a harsh transition right at the 70% mark. From 80% on is virtually all black. On my screen it looks all black at about 95%. I'm assuming something is not quite right, do you have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
Brian
PS.I attatched the 2lightning pictures.
