Paul,
Thanks for the reply. I printed the step chart and I noticed a less than smooth transition right near the 50% mark and a harsh transition right at the 70% mark. From 80% on is virtually all black. On my screen it looks all black at about 95%. I'm assuming something is not quite right, do you have any suggestions?

It could be a grayscale ramp that is not as smooth as it should be. 
Try printing a 21-step test file like the one posted here -- 
http://www.paulroar k.com/BW- Info/21-Step- L16-16-bit. zip -- 
and see if the smooth ramp above the steps has some areas where the 
transitions are uneven. Even where the steps are right on, there can be 
uneven transitions.
