I recently wrote an article for Adorama's "100 in 100" series  about  
the Shadow/Highlight or "Fill" light control in Photoshop  CS2/CS3, as  
well as other applications. It is a great way to open up  dark areas  
to give images a look that approaches what you can  achieve with HDR  
photography. For more info about HDR, I would do an  online search for  
"HDR photography", or on popphoto.com (Jack Howard  has many good  
articles there).

The article, which includes a  black and white before and after image,  
as well as the Photoshop CS3  Shadow/Highlight filter screen shot, can
