Cleavis, It is due to the 100% full chips that the system comes with them (the version sourced from NoMoreCarts anyway). Translation: This solution (the 100% full chips) may be a bit more expensive than comparable systems that rely on chip reprogrammers, software systems to reprogram (where you must run a certain type of system, with the printer connected on parallel - generally not so good for Mac users). Bluntly, in my view the system is still fantastically worthwhile, and should still save you money, and still gives you choice over ink type where previously there was none. Try and source a non-chipped printer if you don't like it!
