My best guess is something with the paper sensor located on the head carriage and/or the auto check for paper thickness. The printer reports a smaller sheet to the driver than inserted. Other test would be similar paper as thick or thicker + feeding the Photorag at 90% if it is grain related. Either a loose electric connection of the paper sensor or deflection of the paper sensor light path because the sensor itself isn't fixed rigid enough or at a small angle instead of loodrecht :-). Then there is the less likely chance the coding strip or whatever method they use on the 3800 isn't reading the position of the head carriage correctly: filth on the strip, or coding sensor dislocated to the strip when thicker paper is going through the printer.
